Authorizing PCLTMTM support

Qestion: How do I authorize PCL support on my Tektronix Phaser Color Printer?

Answer:
If printing from a MacintoshTM or a WindowsTM PC, you will not need PCL authorization because these environments give you access to PostScriptTM drivers. The following TektronixTM PhaserTM printers can emulate HPTM's PCL printer language in monochrome mode only:

  • Phaser 220i (with 14 megabytes RAM)
  • Phaser 240
  • Phaser 300i (with 22 megabytes RAM)
  • Phaser 340
  • Phaser 350
  • Phaser 540
  • Phaser 550
The Phaser 350 and Phaser 550 require an authorization code to enable PCL. To get your authorization code, send your request with the following information:
  • the printer's Ethernet Address (found on the printer's configuration page)
  • the printer's Model Number (located on the printer)
  • the printer's Serial Number (located on the printer)

to: pcl.authorization@opbu.xerox.com

Requests for authorization codes are typically answered within 24 business hours.

Once you have your authorization code, you can download the code using the printer's PhaserLinkTM capability or by using a PostScript snippet.

PhaserLink

To use PhaserLink, you need to have a TCP/IP network and your Phaser 350 or Phaser 550 configured with an IP address.
  1. In your favorite web browser, enter your printer's IP address as the location.
  2. When the PhaserLink page appears, click the configuration link at the bottom of the page.
  3. Click View then click Configure General Settings.
  4. Click Authorization Code.
  5. Enter your authorization code and download it to the printer by clicking Do/Apply.

PostScript Snippet

  1. To authorize the printer using a PostScript snippet, run the authrizr.exe program located on the printer's software diskette or CD-ROM.
  2. Type in your authorization code and click OK; this creates a file called authoriz.ps.
  3. Download this file to your printer by doing the following:
    1. On a PC network, copy the file to the printer's network queue.
    2. On a Macintosh, use the LaserWriter Utility.
    3. If the printer is attached parallel, copy the file to the LPT port the printer is connected to.
The printer utilities are also available on the web: PC and Macintosh.

After sending the authoriz.ps file, cycle power on the printer. The authorization code appears on the configuration page and PCL shows Authorized.

Setting the printer language to AutoSelect

After authorizing PCL, set the printer to autoselect mode. Change the printer port's language through the printer's PhaserLinkTM capability or by downloading a Postscript snippet to the printer.

  3. Click View then click Configure Interface Settings.
  4. Click the Interface you want to view and configure: NetWare Print Server settings, or Parallel settings.
  5. Next to Language:, select PCL5 for the printer to accept PCL5 monochrome-only jobs; or select AutoSelect for the printer to switch between its supported languages.
  6. Click Do/Apply to download this change to the printer.

PostScript Snippet

  • To use the PostScript snippet to set the printer port to AutoSelect, copy the AIS.ps file, located on the printer's utilities diskette or CD-ROM, to the port you want to configure.

For example, to set the parallel port to AutoSelect,
    type: c:\>copy ais.ps lpt1
