Important guidelines When connecting a hard disk to the printer, follow these guidelines: The printer can support up to seven external disks. You must turn on the disk(s) before you turn on the printer. Wait at least 1 minute after turning on the disk(s) before turning on the printer. Terminators The printer has an internal terminator. The printer must always be at one end of the chain with a terminator at the other end (or a terminated device). The ZDISK SCSI hard disk is shipped with an external terminator. Do one of the following: Place this disk at the end of the SCSI chain, making sure no other disks are terminated, and attach the external terminator to one of the connectors. If you have a terminated device at the end of the SCSI chain, place the ZDISK disk in the middle of the SCSI chain and do not attach a terminator. SCSI ID numbers With multiple disks, each disk must have a unique SCSI ID number. Do not turn on the printer or disk until each disk has a unique number. Valid ID numbers for external disks are 0 through 6, with the following exceptions: The printer's SCSI number is 7. The ZDISK disk's ID number is 4. Use the SCSI ID selector on the disk's rear panel to change this number if necessary. To change the ID number, make sure the disk is turned off, then use a small tool to press either the + or - buttons until the number you want appears in the window. Sys/Start file You may load a startup file called Sys/Start onto your external disk. On a Macintosh, the Sys/Start job file is similar to an init file. When you turn on the printer the file executes, providing that Sys/Start has been enabled through a control file downloaded to the printer. Refer to Enabling and disabling SysStart Job execution for more information. The ZDISK SCSI hard disk comes with a Sys/Start job which sets printing parameters to optimize collation. With multiple disks, only one disk can contain a Sys/Start file. Note: If the Sys/Start file contains an error, the printer ignores the remainder of the file and may not start up as expected. Format and initialize Unless the disk is already formatted for operation with a PostScript printer, you have to format and initialize the disk after connecting it to the printer.
