Increase the power and capability of your printer with upgrade kits. Upgrade kits make your printer faster, more networkable and more productive. To order an upgrade, contact your local Tektronix dealer. To locate a dealer, press the "Local Contact" button on the bottom of any Phaser printer web page.
The following upgrade kits are available:
4690F4M 4-Mbyte SIMM:
The Phaser 340 features 8 Mbytes of standard memory. Upgrade the printer's memory to 12 Mbytes by ordering a 4-Mbyte SIMM. The additional memory allows processing of more complex print images.
16-Mbyte SIMM (part of Z340FX Upgrade kit):
Upgrade to a 24 Mbyte configuration by installing the Z340FX upgrade. The kit, which includes a 16-Mbyte RAM SIMM, upgrades the printer to the extended features configuration. Refer to ³Z340FX Extended Features Upgrade" below for more information.
The Phaser 340 features one RAM SIMM connector, it holds either a 4-Mbyte or a 16-Mbyte RAM SIMM. The total amount of memory installed in the printer is reported on the printer's startup page and on its configuration page. In general, more memory improves data throughput, reduces the level of compression used during image processing, provides more storage for downloadable fonts, and allows printing of the most complex images. Additional memory also reduces print file offload time from the host by increasing the size of input buffers for the I/O ports.
Z340FX Extended Features Upgrade:
This is known as the printer's Option FX; it adds 52 built-in fonts to the printer as well as an engine ROM upgrade. The upgrade also includes a 16-Mbyte RAM SIMM to bring the printer's total to 24 Mbytes. With the upgrade the printer supports, job pipelining, 600 x 300 dot per inch printing and more downloadable font storage.
There are two options to this upgrade:
If your printer is serial-numbered BBxxxxx or lower, order Z340FX Option 01.
If your printer is serial-numbered BCxxxxx or higher, order Z340FX Option 02.
Z340PL PhaserLink TM Upgrade:
This is known as the printer's Option PL; it lets you communicate to the Phaser 340 printer through a web browser. PhaserLink uses the browser language HTTP. Through a web browser you can view printer status, set printer configurations and link to on-line printer documentation via the World Wide Web. All without proprietarty, printer-specific, and platform-specific software. PhaserLink software requires the printer to have either an Ethernet card (Option 4676FP1) or a Token Ring card (Option 4676FP4) installed.
Printers serial-numbered BCxxxxx and above already have PhaserLink software installed. For printers serial-numbered BBxxxxx and below, there are two options to this upgrade:
If your printer is a Phaser 340 Plus, order Z340PL Option 01.
If your printer is a base Phaser 340, order Z340PL Option 02.
PhaserShare TM Network Card ROM Upgrade:
PhaserShare is the software built into the printer's Ethernet and Token Ring Network Cards. This ROM upgrade updates an Ethernet or Token Ring card to PhaserShare Version 2.0. With PhaserShare Version 2.0, the Phaser 340 supports PhaserLink software, supports Novell's NDS features of NetWare 4.1, and supports TCP/IP as a standard feature. Software and manuals are also included. Printers serial-numbered BCxxxxx and above already have PhaserShare Version 2.0 software installed. Only printers serial-numbered BBxxxxx and below, require this upgrade to support PhaserLink and obtain the new NDS features and TCP/IP support.
For an Ethernet Card, order 4676UP1 Upgrade Kit for Ethernet Network Card.
For an Token Ring Card, order 4676UP4 Upgrade Kit for Ethernet Network Card.
4676FP1 Ethernet Network Card:
This is referred to as the printer's Option P1. This kit includes a PhaserShare Version 2.0 card with 10baseT and 10base2 connectors supporting TCP/IP, EtherTalk, Novell NetWare and HTTP protocols. Software and manuals are also included.
4676FP3 LocalTalk Network Card:
This is the printer's Option P3. This kit includes a card with a circular DIN-8 connector supporting the LocalTalk protocol and an RS-232 (serial) port.
4676FP4 Token Ring Network Card:
This is the printer's Option P4. It includes a PhaserShare Version 2.0 card with a 10baseT and a twisted pair DB-9 connector supporting TCP/IP, TokenTalk, Novell NetWare and HTTP protocols. Software and manuals are also included.
4690F20 PhaserPrint TM Software:
For printing in UNIX and VMS environments, Tektronix offers PhaserPrint software. PhaserPrint software provides fast raster screen copy printing to Tektronix color printers. PhaserPrint software also provides a graphical user interface for push-button control of Tektronix printer features. PhaserPrint software works with the workstation¹s native spooling system to print PostScript files and raster files in these formats: Sun Raster Format (SRF), xwd, and SGI RGB.
4690F41 PhaserSym TM Software:
For printing in VMS environments, Tektronix offers PhaserSym software. PhaserSym software is a VMS print symbiont for DEC OpenVMS, VAX, and DEC OpenVMS AXP computers. PhaserSym software requires the printer include Ethernet support.
Z340LTA Lower Paper Tray Assembly:
With its 500-sheet capacity, the Lower Paper Tray Assembly transforms the printer into a high-volume printing solution for networked environments. Using the optional Lower Paper Tray Assembly, you can configure the printer for dual-tray printing capability. Two trays are especially useful if you commonly print on several types of media, for example, office paper in the lower tray and transparencies, letterhead, or label media in the upper tray. For metric trays, order Z340LTA Option 01.
Add a hard disk for font storage:
With the Phaser 340 printer, you can connect one or more Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) external hard disks to the printer and use them for additional font storage. Once you download a font to the external disk, the font remains there until you remove it.
The Phaser 340 printer can use most SCSI hard disks that support the full SCSI command set. Also, most SCSI hard disks that work with an Apple LaserWriter will work with the Phaser 340 printer. Contact your computer or printer dealer for information.
To connect an external disk, you need these items:
A SCSI peripheral cable for each disk. The printer uses a SCSI-2, 50-pin connector.
One SCSI cable terminator, unless your disk has an internal terminator.
The printer supports up to seven external disks connected at one time.
Upgrade your Phaser 340 to a Phaser 350:
Upgrading your Phaser 340 gives it the ability to print at a rate up to 6 pages per minute. It also includes PhaserLink and enhanced driver support for both Windows and Macintosh.
This upgrade can only be installed on Phaser 340 printers serial-numbered BCxxxxx, BExxxxx, BDxxxxx and printers serial-numbered B6Exxxx, B6Fxxxx and B6Gxxxxx and up (where the third digit is a letter). Any printer to be upgraded must include the extended feature option (which, among other things, gives the printer 600 x 300 dpi printing capability). You can examine the printer's startpage, for the Tektronix Version firmware 2.xxPlus, which indicates the extended feature option is installed. The startpage also indicates 69 fonts available when the extended feature option is installed.
