Parallel/Serial Configuration for Solaris 2.x

Parallel
The following procedure describes how to use the Admintool program to configure a workstation running Solaris 2.x to support a color PostScript printer.
- Log in as root on your workstation.
- Start admintool from the gui or by entering admintool at the command line.
- Click on Browse and select Printers.
- Click on Edit and select Add and then Local Printer.
For Printer Name, enter the name of the print queue (this can be anything).
For Description, enter anything.
For Printer Port, select the standard device /dev/bpp0, or select the appropriate port.
For Printer Type, select PostScript.
For File Contents, select PostScript for PostScript files and ASCII text files. Select any for files with PCL escape sequences when connected to printers that support PCL.
Note: To send PCL files to the parallel port requires the printer to be authorized for PCL
and the printer's parallel port must be set to interpret PCL. To set the port, print
the utility file AIS.PS to the parallel port.
- Click on OK
Serial
The following procedure describes how to use the Admintool program to configure a workstation running Solaris 2.x to support a color PostScript printer.
- Log in as root on your workstation.
- Start admintool from the gui or by entering admintool at the command line.
- Click on Browse and select menu item Printers.
- Click on Edit and select menu item Add and then Local Printer.
For Printer Name, enter the name of the print queue (this can be anything).
For Description, enter anything.
For Printer Port, select the standard device /dev/term/a, or /dev/term/b, or the port to which the printer is connected.
For Printer Type, select PostScript.
For File Contents, select PostScript for PostScript files and ASCII text files. Select any for files with PCL escape sequences when connected to printers that support PCL.
Note: To send PCL files to the parallel port requires the printer to be authorized for PCL
and the printer's parallel port must be set to interpret PCL. To set the port, print
the utility file AIS.PS to the parallel port.
- Click on OK
- To modify the serial port settings, from the admintool click on Browse and select Serial Ports.
- Double click on the appropriate port or click to highlight it then click on Edit and select Modify.
For Template, select Terminal - Hardwired.
At the top right of the screen, for Detail select More so that more options are available.
For Port, click on Service Enable so that it is selected.
For Baud Rate select the appropriate value that matches the printer's speed. (9600 is the printer default)
Under the Options section, click on Initialize Only so that it is enabled.
Also under the Options section, be sure that Bidirectional is NOT selected.
- Click on OK
