Serial Configuration for AIX® 3.x and 4.x

AIX 3.x

The following procedure describes how to use the AIX System Management program (SMIT) to configure a workstation running AIX 3.x to support a color PostScript printer.

  1. Log in as root on your workstation.

  2. From the command line type smit.

  3. Select Devices.

  4. Select Printer/Plotter.

  5. Select Printer/Plotter Devices.

  6. Select Add a Printer/Plotter.

  7. Choose the appropriate Parent Adapter from the list.

      For Printer/Plotter Type, select qms100.

      For Printer/Plotter Interface, select rs232.

      For Parent Adapter, select sa0, or the appropriate parent adapter.


    Note: Fill in the appropriate entry fields for printer connection characteristics. The default values are sufficient except the following should be modified:
      For PORT number, press F4 and select s1 or the appropriate port number.

      For BAUD rate, select the appropriate value that matches the printer's speed. (9600is the printer default).

      For PARITY, select none.

      For BITS per character, select 8.

      For Number of STOP BITS, select 1.

      For Printer TIME OUT period, select 600.

      For STATE to be configured at boot time, select available.

  8. Press enter to process the information. Make sure SMIT finishes with an OK in the upper left hand corner. Use F3 to return to the first Printer/Plotter Devices menu.

AIX 4.x

The following procedure describes how to use the AIX System Management program (SMIT) to configure a workstation running AIX 4.x to support a color PostScript printer.

  1. Log in as root on your workstation.

  2. From the command line type smit.

  3. Select Print Spooling.

  4. Select Add a Print Queue.

      For Attachment Type, select local.

      For Printer Type, select Other, then generic.

      For Printer select Add NEW Printer.

      For Printer Interface, select rs232.

      For Parent Adapter, select sa0, or the appropriate parent adapter.

      For Name of NEW print queues to add, arrow down to PostScript, then type in the print queue name on the right hand side. This can be anything.


    Note: Fill in the appropriate entry fields for printer connection characteristics. The default values are sufficient except the following should be modified:
      For PORT number, press F4 and select s1 or the appropriate port number.

      For BAUD rate, select the appropriate value that matches the printer's speed. (9600is the printer default).

      For PARITY, select none.

      For BITS per character, select 8.

      For Number of STOP BITS, select 1.

      For FLOW CONTROL to be used, select dtr.

      For Printer TIME OUT period, select 600.

      For STATE to be configured at boot time, select available.

  5. Press enter to process the information. Make sure SMIT finishes with an OK in the upper left hand corner. Use F3 to return to the first Printer/Plotter Devices menu.
