Configuring Printers

The Configure Printer dialog box

The Configure Printer dialog box is used to display or set various printer parameters such as printer name, authorization code, Ethernet address, Token Ring address, and job accounting information. Parameters set through this dialog box are stored in the printer's internal non-volatile memory. The printer parameters that are settable through the Configure Printer dialog box can be organized into four groups, which correspond to the four tabs available in the dialog box:

Using the Configure Printer dialog box

  1. To display the Configure Printer dialog box, click on the Configure Printer button in the Main window.

  2. The General tab is always on top when you first display the Configure Printer dialog box; to display one of the other tabs available in the dialog box, click on its name at the top of the dialog box.

  3. With the tab displayed, you can read or change settings. When you have the settings the way you want them, click the Apply button to make the changes and stay in the tab, or click the OK button to make the changes and return to the Main window. If you click the Cancel button, your changes are ignored and you are returned to the Main window.

Note: Clicking the Apply or OK buttons accepts changes made to all tabs in a dialog box, not just the tab currently displayed.
  4. After applying changes in the General and Parallel tabs, the PhaserShare Administrator displays a dialog box indicating that you must reset the printer for the changes to take effect.

The next four topics describe in detail the four tabs of the Configure Printer dialog box.

Controlling printer settings: the General tab

The General tab allows you to display and set various miscellaneous printer parameters.

Printer settings available in the General tab

Setting Description
Printer Name

This field contains the current name for the printer selected from the list in the Main window. You can change the name by entering a different printer name (between 5 and 32 characters long). This name is used by AppleTalk and must conform to naming conventions for that protocol. The new name takes effect when the printer is reset.

Authorization Code

Authorization codes are used to activate optional printer features. To send an authorization code to the printer, enter the authorization code in the field, including the hyphens (-), and click the Apply button. Authorization codes sent to the printer take effect after the printer is reset. This field contains the current authorization code for the printer listed in the Printer Name field, if the code has been sent to the printer for a successful authorization and the printer has been reset. If the code is shown as all zeros, no authorization has been done yet for the selected printer.

Printer Model

This field reports the printer model.

PostScript Firmware Version

This field reports the version number of the PostScript firmware installed in the printer.

PhaserShare Firmware Version

This field reports the firmware version of the PhaserShare card installed in the printer.

Output Settings

Face Up*

Face Down*

Start Page

Check Print*

The Face Up and Face Down buttons control whether finished prints are deposited in the output tray face up or face down. To print your document face up, stacking the pages so that the first page is on the bottom, click the Face Up box. To print your document face down, stacking the pages so that the pages face down in numerical order, click the Face Down box. This selection changes the printer's default output orientation, so all subsequent jobs also print with the chosen orientation.

Note: Many PostScript drivers, including the Tektronix Phaser 540 driver, send output settings data, so the value set by using the Administrator may be overridden by whatever is set in the job.

When the Start Page box is checked, the printer prints a startup page each time it is reset or turned on. When the box is not checked, the startup page is not printed.

The Check Print option in the supported printer drivers causes the printer to pause after printing the first page of a multiple-page print job. This allows you to check the colors or print quality before continuing with the rest of the job. After checking, \x7f you can resume or cancel printing from the printer's front panel. Printing resumes automatically after the time period specified in the Check Print Timeout field. When this box is checked, the printer's Check Print feature is enabled, and you can turn it on from the driver. If it is not checked, Check Print is disabled, and turning it on from the driver has no effect.

Time Out Settings

Job

Manual Feed

Wait

Energy Star

Check Print Timeout*

Multi-purpose Feed*

The value in this field determines how long the printer waits during an interrupted print job before ending the job. Enter a value in seconds. A value of 0 indicates no time out; that is, the printer does not time out on an interrupted job. The value entered must be between 0 and 65535.

The value in this field determines how long the printer waits for paper to be inserted into the manual feed slot for a manual feed print job. If paper is not inserted within the specified period of time after the job is sent to the printer, the printer attempts to pick paper from one of the paper trays. Enter a value in seconds. A value of 0 indicates no time out; that is, the printer does not time out while waiting for paper to be inserted. The value entered must be between 0 and 65535.

The value in this field determines how long the printer waits for expected data during a print job. If the printer does not receive expected data within the specified period of time after the job is started, the printer cancels the job. Enter a value in seconds. A value of 0 indicates no time out; that is, the printer does not time out while waiting for data. The value entered must be between 0 and 65535.

The value in this field determines how long the printer must remain in an idle state before entering Energy Star mode. (In Energy Star mode, the printer uses much less power than it does in an idle state, but it returns to normal operation upon receiving print jobs.) Enter a value in hours. For a Phaser 550 printer, the value entered must be between 0 and 90. For a Phaser 540 printer, the value entered must be between 1 and 90. For Phaser 340 and Phaser 350 printers, the value entered must be between 1 and 999.

This field contains the Check Print timeout value in minutes. This is the amount of time the printer pauses before printing the rest of the job. You may enter a value between 0 and 10080 minutes. A value of 0 causes the printer to pause indefinitely until it receives a command from the front panel. This timeout is used when the Check Print box is checked and the Check Print option has been selected in the printer driver.

The value in this field determines how long the printer waits for a user's response (pressing the Confirm button) to front panel messages associated with multi-purpose feeder printing. If there is no response within the timeout period, the job is canceled. Enter a value in seconds. A value of 0 indicates no time out; that is, the printer does not time out while waiting. The value entered must be from 0 to 65535 seconds.

* If these selections are not supported by the selected printer, they are grayed-out.

This field specifies the printer's Token Ring address (by default, this is a bit swapped version of the Printer's Printer ID, and it is a unique address on the network). You can supply a Locally Administered Address.

For Locally Administered Addresses, you can enter any valid Token Ring address between 4x:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx and 7x:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx. Entering an empty string causes the printer to reset the address to the printer's default address.

    Bridging

This list box specifies the Token Ring source routing. The choices are:

    Token Ring Speed

This field reports the Token Ring speed set by the jumper on the PhaserShare Token Ring card installed in the printer. The speed is either 4 Mbps or 16 Mbps. For information about setting the ring speed jumper on the Token Ring card, see Setting the ring-speed jumper on the Token Ring card.

    Early Token Release

When this box is checked, Early Token Release is on; the printer releases the token at the end of the last byte transmitted. This option has no effect when Token Ring Speed is 4 Mbps.

    Route Broadcasting

These buttons control the default frame type for source route broadcasts. The choices are:

Setting parallel port parameters: the Parallel tab

This tab is used to display and set various parameters affecting the printer's parallel port.

Note: If you change any settings in this tab, clicking the Apply or OK buttons displays a dialog box that reminds you to reset the printer. The changes you make in this tab do not take effect until you reset the printer.

This box allows you to set the Adobe PostScript protocol for the printer driver you are using:

Output Device

This field is read only. The PhaserShare Administrator automatically sets the value in this field according to the selection made in the Communication field.

Language

Select the language you want the printer to receive on the parallel port. The choices are:

Enable Parallel

When this box is checked, the printer's parallel port is enabled. If it is not checked, the parallel port is disabled. If you are using the parallel port, make sure that this box is checked.

Delayed Output Close

When this box is checked, the printer does not begin a new job on this port until the current job is completed. If the box is not checked, the printer can begin processing a new job while it is still printing a previous job. When this box is not checked, job accounting is disabled for the parallel port.

Changing Protocol to Raw and Language to AutoSelect, HPGL, or PCL when Language is set to PostScript and Protocol is set to Normal

  1. In the Parallel tab, select Binary from the Protocol pull-down list.

  2. Select either AutoSelect, HPGL, or PCL from the Language pull-down list.

  1. In the Parallel tab, select Binary from the Protocol pull-down list.

  2. Select PostScript from the Language pull-down list.

  3. Select Normal from the Protocol pull-down list.

  4. Click the Apply button.

Job accounting: the Job Display tab

Note: When Delayed Output Close is disabled for a protocol, job accounting is disabled for that protocol.
A printer equipped with a PhaserShare card can store information about jobs printed on the selected printer. The information is stored either in the printer's memory or on a hard disk, if one is connected to the printer. If the log file is stored in the printer's memory, it is lost when the printer is reset; therefore, it is recommended that a hard disk be used with this job accounting feature.

The printer stores job accounting information for up to 5000 jobs on the hard disk if one is connected to the printer. The printer stores job accounting information for up to 500 jobs if the printer is not equipped with a hard disk.

For Phaser 540 printers only: if the printer is not equipped with a hard disk, the job accounting information is lost each time the printer goes into Energy Star mode or the printer is reset.

This tab displays a list of job accounting records stored by the printer. This job summary list contains the name of the user who submitted the job, the file name of the job, and the number of pages. The six buttons across the bottom of the tab can be used to get job information from the printer, clear job information from the printer, and export job information to a file.

Note: It is best to use the Job Display tab only when the printer is idle.
For all fields in the Job Display tab, the actual values reported vary depending on the protocol and print command used when each job was printed. For example, using NPRINT over NetWare provides the printer with the most information about the job being printed. When using Windows and NetWare, the job name is often LST: or LST:BANNER. Other jobs from other ports may provide even less information about the job.

Displaying the Job Display tab

  1. In the Main window, click the Configure Printer button; this displays the Configure Printer dialog box.

  2. In the Configure Printer dialog box, click the Job Display tab; this displays the Job Display tab.

When the Job Display tab is first displayed, the job summary list is empty and the Total Number of Jobs field reports the number of jobs stored by the printer.

Getting job information

To get job information:

  1. In the Job Display tab, click either the Get Oldest Job button or the Get All Jobs button.

  2. To get detailed information on a job, click on that job to select it. The Job Detail area displays the detailed information about the selected job.

Note: Pressing the Get All Jobs button or the Get Oldest Job button causes the Administrator to retrieve only those jobs that have pages printed. Therefore, pressing Get All Jobs may cause fewer jobs to be displayed than are displayed in the Total Number of Jobs field.

Exporting job information to a file

You can store in a file the information in the list and the job details for all jobs in the list. To export job information to a file:

  1. In the Job Display tab, click the Export Data button. The Export Data dialog box is displayed.

  2. Enter the path and file name that you want for the export data file, or accept the default (PHASER.LOG).

  3. Click the OK button to export the data to the file, or click the Cancel button to return to the Job Display tab without exporting the data to the file. If you click the OK button and export data to an existing file, the new information is appended to the file.

The file created by the Export Data function is formatted as shown in the following three example records:

SUPERVISOR,480,LST:BANNER,KRUSTY,46,46,3,3
0,,,,1,1,3,3
,0,flesh:adamsc;document:oxford.ps,,5,5,3,3

The fields are separated by commas (,) and an empty field is indicated by two consecutive commas (,,). The meanings of the fields are shown here:

Clearing job information

You can clear the job information stored by the printer. To clear job information:

  1. In the Job Display tab, click either the Clear Oldest Job button or the Clear All Jobs button.

  2. You can undo the clear for the last job record cleared by clicking the Undo Clear button. For example, if you click Undo Clear after Clear All Jobs, only the information for a single job cleared is restored, not all the jobs that were cleared. Clicking the Undo Clear button a second time has no effect. The next example illustrates the effect of the Undo Clear button after displaying and clearing job information records.

Example: displaying and clearing job information records

In this example, the printer initially has job information stored for two print jobs, as reported by the Total Number of Jobs field. Clicking the Get All Jobs button displays job information for both print jobs.

Clicking the Clear All Jobs button clears both jobs from the list. The Total Number of Jobs field reports no job information records stored in the printer or on the printer's hard disk.

Clicking the Undo Clear button restores the job information only for the last job cleared, which was the last job in the list. The Total Number of Jobs field now indicates a single Job information record stored in the printer or on the printer's hard disk.

Note: Printing a job or jobs between two Undo Clear operations displays the job information for the newly printed jobs. This information is in addition to the job information displayed by the Undo Clear operation. For example, if you press the Undo Clear button, print a job, and then press the Undo Clear button for a second time, the following information is displayed:
Information for the most recent job cleared (as expected)
Information for the newly printed job (unexpected result)

Configuring protocols: the Protocol Settings dialog box

The Protocol Settings dialog box is the starting place for changing the values of network parameters stored on the selected printer. The following tabs are provided for a network-connected printer:

The Protocol Settings dialog box allows you to configure the printer for operation over the network protocols supported by the PhaserShare cards. For example, if your printer is already configured for operation over NetWare, and you want to set up the printer so that it can also operate over TCP/IP, you can use the NetWare connection to send the TCP/IP configuration settings to the printer.

Viewing and changing the printer's network parameters

The Protocol Settings dialog box allows you to configure the printer's networking parameters. For example, if your setup requires a login password for the printer to communicate with the file server, you could use the Print Server tab in the Protocol Settings dialog box to enter this password. Also, if you change other network parameters, such as the IP address, you could use the TCP/IP tab to accomplish this.

  1. Display the Protocol Settings dialog box.

    1. In the Main window, click the Configure Printer button; this displays the Configure Printer dialog box.

    2. In the Configure Printer dialog box, click the Ethernet or Token Ring tab; this displays the Ethernet or Token Ring tab.

    3. In the Ethernet or Token Ring tab, click the Protocol Settings button; this displays the Protocol Settings dialog box.

  2. Click on the tab for the protocol you want to configure; this displays the tab for that protocol.

  3. With the tab displayed, you can read or change settings. When you have the settings the way you want them, click the Apply button to make the changes and stay in the tab, or click the OK button to make the changes and return to the Configure Printer dialog box. If you click the Cancel button, your changes are ignored and you are returned to the Configure Printer dialog box.

Note: Clicking the Apply or OK buttons accepts changes made to all tabs in a dialog box, not just the tab currently displayed.
The next six topics describe the six tabs of the Protocol Settings dialog box in detail.

Print Server tab

Use the Print Server tab to set up IPX protocol parameters for each Tektronix print server on your NetWare network. The Print Server tab contains the Set Password button, which displays the Set Password dialog box, allowing you to set and change the print server's login password.

Print Server parameters available in the Print Server tab

Function Description
Network Address

This field reports the network address (bindery address) of the selected printer.

Physical Layer

This field reports the physical layer used to transmit IPX data packets.

Print Server Name

This field contains the current name for the print server selected from the list in the Main window. To change the name, click in the field and type a valid NetWare print server name using uppercase characters. The new name takes effect the next time the print server or printer is reset.

When you click the Apply or OK button, the Administrator displays a dialog box asking if you want to reset the print server. If you change the print server name and reset the print server, the Administrator may lose its connection to the printer because of a mismatch between the Administrator's selected print server name and printer's stored print server name. If this happens, go back to the Search Options dialog box and click the OK button. Then select the new name even if the old name shows up on the list.

Scan Interval

Use this field to change the interval at which the printer polls for jobs. The value entered must be between 1 and 3600 seconds. The default is 15 seconds.

Filtering

This field allows you to choose whether the printer filters out control characters. The choices are InterpreterBased or None. In most cases, Filtering should be set to None.

Language

Select the language you want the printer to receive on the print server port. The selections are listed here:

Enable Print Server

When this box is checked, the Print Server protocol is enabled. If it is not checked, the Print Server protocol is disabled. If the Print Server protocol is disabled, the Administrator can communicate with the printer, but the printer cannot service print jobs.

Enable Notification

When checked, this box enables the print server's notification capabilities. When the box is not checked, notification is disabled; this parameter can also be viewed and set in the Configure Notify List dialog box. To view and set the Notify List, see Managing notify lists: the Configure Notify List dialog box.

Delayed Output Close

When this box is checked, the printer does not begin a new job on this port until the current job is completed. If the box is not checked, the printer can begin processing a new job while it is still printing a previous job.

When this box is not checked, job accounting is disabled for the NetWare protocol.

Frame Type

This list box allows you to choose the Ethernet or Token Ring frame type for packet transmission:

Ethernet frame types:

Enable NDS*

When this box is checked, NDS support is enabled. If it is not checked, NDS support is disabled. When NDS is enabled, the printer uses NDS to communicate with the file servers on the network. When NDS is disabled, the printer uses Bindery services as defined in NetWare 3.1 to communicate with file servers.

If this box is checked, an value must be entered in the DS Tree field.

Enable Banners*

When this box is checked, banner pages are printed with each job. When this box is not checked, banner pages are not printed.

DS Tree*

This field contains the NetWare Directory Services tree that the printer looks for when connecting to file servers on the network. The NDS tree must be entered into this field if the printer is in NDS mode. The entry in this field must be no more than 32 characters in length.

DS Context*

This field contains the NetWare Directory Services context that the printer looks into when connecting to file servers on the network. The entry in this field must be no more than 254 characters in length.

FS Timeout*

This field contains a value in seconds that specifies the amount of time the printer searches for the configuration file server or the directory services tree. (This timeout value is valid in bindery mode and NDS mode.) If the printer does not find the configuration file server or the directory services tree within the specified time, the printer scans the network for a bindery file server with queues to service.

You may enter a value between 0 and 1999 minutes. The default value is 3 minutes. You may need to increase the value beyond the default if the network has a file server that takes a long time to start up after a power cycle. Setting the value to 0 disables the timeout; that is, the printer will continue to search for a configuration file server or NDS tree indefinitely.

* If these boxes are grayed-out, the printer is equipped with an earlier PhaserShare network card that does not support NDS.

Identifying the directory services tree and context

To identify the directory services tree, type whoami at the DOS prompt. For the example screen shown on page -216, the current tree is TEK_WV.

Another way to identify the directory services tree is to use the NetWare User Tools (NWUSER.EXE). Select Connections from the Tool Bar; the current tree is identified by the tree icon.

To identify the context, use the NWAdmin utility. Select the print server from within the tree. Then select Object Details; the Print Server dialog box displays the context in the following format:

Name: print-server-name.context

For example, in Name: TEK026E6F.Steve_OU.Eng.CIPD, the context is Steve_OU.Eng.CIPD.

Displaying the Print Server tab

  2. In the Protocol Settings dialog box, the Print Server tab is the first tab displayed.

Note: If you change any settings in this tab, clicking the Apply or OK buttons displays a dialog box that allows you to reset the print server. The changes you make in this tab do not take effect until you reset the print server.

To change the print server's login password (optional)

Use this procedure to change the password that the printer uses to attach (log on) to the file servers it will service. This procedure changes the password on the printer. It also changes the password on the selected file server or on the file servers listed in the configuration file if one is used.

Note: If you are using a configuration file server, you need to be logged on to all file servers listed in the configuration file. If you are not using a configuration file server, the Administrator sets passwords only on the file servers you are logged on to.
  1. In the Print Server tab, click the Set Password button. This displays the Set Password dialog box.

  2. Type the new password in the first field; the field displays asterisks (*) when you type the password.

  3. Retype the new password in the second field.

Note: To clear the password, enter a blank string in both fields (select and delete any text in the fields).
  4. Click the OK button to confirm the password, or click the Cancel button to return to the Print Server tab without changing the password. If the two entries do not match, the Administrator does not set the password. If they do match, the PhaserShare Administrator attempts to set the password as described in the next two topics.

If there is no configuration file server

If you are not using a configuration file server, clicking the OK button in the Set Password dialog box changes the password and displays the Password Changed dialog box. Click OK to return to the Protocol Settings dialog box.

If you are using a configuration file server

If you are using a configuration file server, clicking the OK button in the Set Password dialog box displays the Configuration File Servers dialog box.

The Configuration File Servers dialog box lists the file servers that are stored in the configuration file on the configuration file server. A file server name shown in green text indicates that you are currently attached to the file server and the password for the print server object will be changed. A name shown in red text indicates that you are not currently logged on to the server and the password will not be changed for the print server object on that file server.

If all the file servers are shown in green text, click OK in the Configuration File Servers dialog box to set the password, or click Cancel to return to the Protocol Settings dialog box without changing the password. Clicking OK in the Configuration File Servers dialog box changes the password and displays the Set Password dialog box. Click OK to return to the Protocol Settings dialog box.

If any of the file servers are shown in red text, use the following procedure to set the password. (Clicking OK in the Configuration File Servers dialog box sets the password for the server(s) in green text, but leaves the servers listed in red text unchanged. If you do this, you must use PCONSOLE to manually change the print server objects for the file servers listed in red.)

  1. Record the names of the file servers listed in red type.

  2. Click the Cancel button in the Configuration File Servers dialog box; this returns you to the Protocol Settings dialog box.

  3. Go to the Configure Network dialog box:

    1. In the Protocol Settings dialog box, press OK or Cancel to return to the Configure Printer dialog box.

    2. In the Configure Printer dialog box, press OK or Cancel to return to the Administrator Main window.

    3. In the Main window, click the Configure Network button to display the Configure Network dialog box.

    2. In the Configure Network dialog box, press OK to return to the Administrator Main window.

    3. In the Main window, click the Configure Printer button to display the Configure Printer dialog box.

    4. In the Configure Printer dialog box, click the Ethernet or Token Ring tab; then click the Protocol Settings button to display the Protocol Settings dialog box.

    5. In the Protocol Settings dialog box, click the Set Password button to return to the Set Password dialog box.

  6. Set the password again as described under To change the print server's login password (optional).

TCP/IP tab

Use the TCP/IP tab to set up TCP/IP protocol parameters for each Tektronix printer on your TCP/IP network.

Note: If you change any settings in this tab, clicking the Apply or OK buttons displays a dialog box that reminds you to reset the printer. The changes you make in this tab do not take effect until you reset the printer.

Parameters available in the TCP/IP tab

Function Description
Physical Layer

Reports the physical layer used to transmit TCP/IP.

IP Address*

This is the printer's address on the network. The format is x.x.x.x, where x represents a decimal number from 0 - 255. The value entered must be a valid IP address and not 0.0.0.0, 255.0.0.0, any address starting with 127, or any address ending with 255. You cannot change this entry if the Dynamic Address Resolution box is checked.

Network Mask*

This is needed in networks that use sub-netting. If you are not using sub-netting, leave this blank; the printer will choose an appropriate mask. The format is x.x.x.x, where x represents a decimal number from 0 - 255. You cannot change this entry if the Dynamic Address Resolution box is checked. The printer ignores Network Mask values that are invalid for the given IP address.

Broadcast Address*

This is the address the printer uses to send broadcast packets. The format is x.x.x.x, where x represents a decimal number from 0 - 255. If you are unsure, leave this blank; the printer will choose an appropriate address. You cannot change this entry if the Dynamic Address Resolution box is checked.

Gateway Address*

This field allows you to enter up to four destination address/gateway address pairs. If you enter more than one pair, the pairs must be separated by a space. Gateway addresses are used to communicate with devices not on the same network segment. Enter a destination IP address, followed by a slash (/), then the gateway host IP address. The destination IP address can be 0.0.0.0 or any valid IP address of the segment that you want to communicate with. The gateway host address is the address of a host that is used to retransmit the packets from the current network segment to another network segment. The format for each address is x.x.x.x, where x represents a decimal number from 0 - 255. You cannot change this entry if the Dynamic Address Resolution box is checked.

Frame Type

This list box allows you to choose the frame type for packet transmission.

Ethernet choices:

Dynamic Address Resolution

Specifies whether the printer should get its IP address from a RARP or BOOTP response at power-up. Checking this box enables the printer to issue RARP and BOOTP requests on power up and to receive configuration information from RARP or BOOTP servers. This box should not be checked for a printer-based configuration; this prevents RARP or BOOTP packets from appearing on the network when the printer is turned on or reset.

If this check box is checked, the values in the following fields are grayed-out and are overwritten when the printer is reset and a RARP or BOOTP server assigns a value: IP Address, Network Mask, Broadcast Address, and Gateway Address.

Phaser 560 printer consumables reporting

The the Printer Info dialog box reports the percentage remaining for the following Phaser 560 printer consumables:

For toner cartridges, percentage remaining indicates the amount of toner left in the cartridge. For replaceable units (for example, the fuser) the percentage remaining is based on the expected life of the unit in prints. For example, if the expected life of the fuser is 30,000 copies and the percentage remaining is 25, then the fuser should be functional for about 7,500 more prints. Refer to the printer's user manual for information on the expected life of the replaceable units.
